Cinnamon Bay Beach

Cinnamon Bay is the longest beach on St. John — about a mile of sand — and the only place inside Virgin Islands National Park where you can spend the night, which changes the character of a visit more than almost anything else on this list. Campers describe waking up to birdsong and having the beach essentially to themselves before day-trippers arrive; the trade-off is that the bay faces north, so it picks up more swell than the sheltered bays farther east, and reviewers note it's worth checking conditions before committing to a swim-heavy day. Snorkeling centers on Cinnamon Cay just offshore, where visitors report reef fish, sea turtles, and — a detail that shows up repeatedly in trip reports — the remains of a small sunken plane. Directly across the road, the Cinnamon Bay Nature Loop winds through the stone ruins of an 18th-century Danish sugar plantation, with ongoing archaeological work having uncovered Taino artifacts predating European contact. A campground store and the Rain Tree Cafe mean this is one of the few St. John beaches where you genuinely don't need to bring your own food.
