Rent on St. John or bring a Jeep over from St. Thomas? The answer affects your ferry plans, airport day and even where you can return the vehicle. Here’s what to check before booking.
Renting a Jeep for St. John is easy.
Choosing where to rent it is the part that deserves more thought.
You have two basic options:
Rent after you arrive in St. John.
Or rent on St. Thomas and take an approved vehicle across on the car ferry.
Those choices sound interchangeable.
They are not.
First, Do You Actually Need a Jeep?
For a trip focused on Cruz Bay and the main North Shore beaches, taxis can work.
For travelers staying in a villa, exploring Coral Bay, visiting trailheads or moving around on their own schedule, a rental vehicle quickly becomes more useful.
The National Park Service notes that the safest way to get around much of St. John is by vehicle. Roads are steep, narrow and winding, and bicycles are not recommended.
Four-wheel-drive Jeeps and SUVs dominate the rental market for a reason.
Option 1: Rent Directly on St. John
This is the cleanest option for many visitors.
Take the passenger ferry into Cruz Bay, collect your rental nearby and start your trip.
At the end, return it on St. John and walk onto the ferry.
No car barge required.

L&L is based in Enighed near Cruz Bay and says it is about a two-minute walk from the ferry dock.

• rentals have a three-day minimum
• later pickup can be arranged for a fee

Parking may sound like a small perk until you try to park in Cruz Bay during a busy evening.
St. John Car Rental
St. John Car Rental has operated on the island since 1974 and is located just off the dock in Cruz Bay.
Its fleet is entirely four-wheel drive and includes Jeeps and larger SUVs.
That makes it useful for travelers who want more space than a standard Wrangler offers.
The company also advertises free parking after 5 p.m. based on availability.
Again, parking matters here.

• you're spending time on both islands
• you want one vehicle for the entire trip
• you're arriving early enough to comfortably make the barge
• your St. Thomas rental company explicitly allows the vehicle to go to St. John
That last point is important.
Do not assume every St. Thomas rental vehicle is allowed on the car ferry.
Ask before paying.
Discount Car Rental
Discount Car Rental operates near Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas and explicitly states that its four-wheel-drive vehicles can be taken to St. John.
It also offers airport pickup and return.
For travelers who want to land, rent one vehicle and keep it through a St. John stay, that is exactly the policy you need to confirm.
So Which St. John Rental Companies Allow Their Jeeps on the Car Ferry?
This is where the internet often gives travelers a sloppy answer.
Renting on St. John and renting on St. Thomas for use on St. John are two different situations.
If you rent a Jeep on St. John, you normally do not need the car ferry at all.
If you intend to take a St. John rental back to St. Thomas for part of your vacation, you need explicit permission from that rental company.
Policies can change.
Do not assume permission because another traveler did it last year.
Ask:
"Can I take this specific rental vehicle on the car ferry to St. Thomas?"
Get the answer directly from the company.
What Does the Car Ferry Cost?
Current non-resident car-barge fares published by operators are generally around:
$50 one way
or
$65 round trip
for a standard car or SUV, depending on the operator.
There is also a Port Authority use fee collected at Red Hook.
Tickets are not interchangeable between ferry companies.
Does a Reservation Guarantee a Spot?
No.
This is important.
VIPA states that vehicles are loaded first-come, first-load, regardless of an advance reservation.
Buying the ticket online does not guarantee a space on a particular departure.
Plan accordingly, especially on flight day.
Which Option Would I Choose?
Rent on St. John if:
You are going directly to St. John and staying there for most or all of the trip.
It keeps the airport and ferry portions simpler.
Rent on St. Thomas if:
You genuinely want one car across both islands and the rental company explicitly permits St. John travel.
This can also make grocery shopping on St. Thomas before crossing more practical.
One More Thing: Book Early
The National Park's busiest period is typically November through April.
Rental inventory gets tight during high season.
If your villa is already booked and you know you want a Jeep, there is very little upside to waiting.
