Best Things to Do in St. Thomas Without a Car
St. Thomas is workable without a rental car when you group activities by location. Walk within Charlotte Amalie or Havensight, use licensed taxis for beaches and East End attractions, and treat ferries as timed day trips rather than casual add-ons.
Walk historic Charlotte Amalie
Start at Fort Christian, the red waterfront fort that now houses the St. Thomas Museum. Visit USVI currently lists typical weekday hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and a $10 admission, but it also warns that hours can vary.
From the waterfront, continue through Emancipation Garden and the historic commercial streets to the 99 Steps. The traditional name survives even though Visit USVI counts 103 steps. At the top, Blackbeard's Castle has reopened to visitors. Its official site currently lists daily 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. tower hours and a $15 general admission with grounds, tower, pool access, and a rum-room tasting.
This route is walkable but steep. Cobblestones, step streets, heat, and the climb make sturdy shoes more useful than beach sandals.
Ride the Skyride to Paradise Point
The Skyride to Paradise Point sits across from the Havensight area and reaches a harbor overlook in less than ten minutes. It is one of the simplest cruise-day activities from the West Indian Company dock.
The operator opens primarily around ship days and publishes a date-specific schedule. Check that schedule before walking over; do not rely on a generic weekly listing.
Take a taxi to Magens Bay
Magens Bay is a straightforward taxi beach with calm-water appeal, restrooms, rentals, and food service. The Magens Bay Authority currently charges non-residents $7 per person, with children under 12 free, plus $2 for vehicle parking. Confirm the taxi fare before boarding and agree on the return plan.
Magens is a swimming and beach-day choice. Travelers whose main goal is reef snorkeling should consider a different beach or a guided water outing.
Pair Coral World with Coki Beach
Coral World Ocean Park is next to Coki Beach and is reachable by licensed taxi. General admission includes the underwater observatory, reef and turtle exhibits, shark shallows, touch pools, and scheduled presentations. The operator currently lists 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. hours, with the ticket booth closing at 3:00 p.m., but also posts seasonal closure dates.
Plan two to three hours for general admission, then use same-day reentry if you also spend time at Coki Beach. Reserve add-on animal or underwater experiences directly; they are not included in general admission.
Take the Water Island ferry
The passenger ferry from Crown Bay Marina to Phillips Landing takes about ten minutes. Honeymoon Beach is a walk from the landing. This is a strong choice for a quieter beach day from the Crown Bay side without renting a car.
The ferry is cash-only according to the current operator guide, and service varies on holidays. Check the last return before leaving St. Thomas.
Day-trip to St. John
The most frequent connection runs between Red Hook and Cruz Bay. A taxi from the cruise area to Red Hook plus the passenger ferry creates a full transport chain, so a cruise visitor needs a conservative return margin.
Once in Cruz Bay, use safari taxis for the North Shore or walk the Lind Point Trails. Do not attempt a beach, long hike, late lunch, and shopping list in one short port day.

Four-hour historic plan
Fort Christian, downtown streets, 99 Steps, Blackbeard's Castle, then a taxi back to the ship or hotel.
Six-hour beach plan
