Do You Need a Car in the U.S. Virgin Islands?
The answer changes by island and itinerary. A car can be valuable for a villa stay, several beach days, or a St. Croix trip that combines towns, beaches, and historic sites. It may be unnecessary for a short stay near town, a resort with shuttles, or a trip built around guided excursions.
St. Thomas offers the widest mix of taxis, rental cars, transfers, and tours. St. John is easy to visit without a car, but a rental Jeep can open up more beaches and the East End. St. Croix’s size makes a vehicle more useful for many visitors.
Ask about left-side driving, parking, insurance, fuel, road access, and island-use restrictions before paying. A car is only helpful if it fits the places and pace your group actually wants.
