Brown Bay

Brown Bay is one of the few beaches in this directory that's inseparable from getting there. There's no vehicle access — reaching the beach means hiking about 0.8 miles down the Brown Bay Trail off East End Road, a moderate route that climbs over a ridge before dropping to the shore, roughly 30 minutes each way, with close to 700 feet of cumulative elevation change if you continue on to the connecting Johnny Horn Trail. What repeat hikers mention most: a genuine hermit-crab colony crowding the path just before the beach, wild donkeys and goats along the way, and a payoff of a narrow, wind-swept beach that's sandy near the trailhead and turns to pebble and sea grass toward the west, where the extensive stone ruins of a former plantation sit half-reclaimed by brush. Sargassum is common enough on this open, north-facing shore that several guides flag it as a real possibility rather than an exception, and snorkeling opinions split between visitors who find good grass-bed life and others who call the water occasionally murky. Ambitious hikers can continue past the ruins along the coastline to link up with Waterlemon Cay and the Leinster Bay Trail, or detour up to the Windy Hill ruins for a wide view toward the British Virgin Islands. There are no facilities of any kind — bring everything, and start early, since the climb back out in the heat is the part every trip report mentions.
