Europa Bay
Europa Bay earns its reputation as one of St. John's least-visited beaches largely because of what it takes to get there and what's waiting once you arrive. The easiest route is a roughly 15-to-20-minute hike each way along a spur off the Lameshur Bay Trail, past a large salt pond, before dropping to a shoreline made of medium coral cobblestone rather than sand. Hiking guides consistently warn that the bay can be windy with intimidating surf, and that sea urchins are common among the rocks near the water's edge, so snorkeling is really only worthwhile after a day or two of calm winds out of the north. When conditions cooperate, the best snorkeling sits along the bay's eastern side. A short spur trail from the same junction leads instead to Europa Point, a bluff-top viewpoint over the bay that several hikers rate as a worthwhile add-on even if they skip the beach itself. There are no facilities of any kind at Europa Bay, and the payoff for the effort is largely solitude — repeat visitors describe having the beach to themselves as the norm rather than the exception.
