Great Lameshur Bay Beach

Great Lameshur rewards the drive, and the drive is the real decision here: pavement ends about a mile out and a rough, high-clearance road takes over, which is exactly why most visitors pass it by for the easier beaches on St. John's north shore. What's waiting is a rocky, stone-covered beach that's better for snorkeling than for lounging — coral sits close to shore, and this is one of the better spots on the island to actually see something underwater without booking a boat. There are no facilities here, so bring everything you need. If you have time, the site of the historic Tektite underwater habitat sits nearby between Great and Little Lameshur, and old plantation ruins are a short walk down the shoreline.
