Uber and Lyft in the USVI: What to Use Instead
The direct answer
Do not plan on Uber or Lyft for transportation in St. Thomas, St. John, or St. Croix. As of this article's August 29, 2026 review, the companies' official city directories do not list a U.S. Virgin Islands service market. A generic search page for a place called "St. Thomas" is not proof that app rides can be requested in the territory.
The established alternatives are licensed taxis, VITRAN fixed-route buses, ferries, rental vehicles, and prearranged local drivers.
Licensed taxis
USVI taxis use regulated rates rather than the app-based fare shown before an Uber or Lyft ride. The Virgin Islands Port Authority says official taxis have a dome light and the letters TP on the license plate. It also tells passengers to confirm the rate before entering.
Many airport taxis are multi-destination vans carrying several passengers. Ask these questions before boarding:
- Is the quoted fare per person or for the vehicle?
- Is the ride shared or private?
- Are luggage or late-hour charges separate?
- Can the driver accept a card, or is cash required?
- What phone number should you use for the return pickup?

Safari taxis are not the same as an app ride
On St. John, open-air safari vehicles are a familiar way to reach North Shore beaches from Cruz Bay. They commonly group riders by destination. That is convenient for Trunk, Cinnamon, Maho, and other well-used stops, but it is not door-to-door, on-demand app service.
For Coral Bay, an isolated villa, dinner after dark, or an early ferry connection, arrange the return in advance. Save the driver's number and agree on the pickup location.
VITRAN fixed-route buses
VITRAN is the territorial public bus system. The official regular fare is currently $2, exact fare is required, and buses use designated stops. Official route listings include St. Thomas connections toward Red Hook and Bordeaux, St. John routes between Cruz Bay, Coral Bay, and Salt Pond, and several St. Croix routes.
VITRAN can reduce costs when the route matches the trip and time is flexible. It is not a dependable substitute for a taxi when catching a flight, ferry, cruise departure, or fixed reservation. Check the current route and service notice rather than assuming a precise tourist timetable.
Locally operated "dollar rides" or informal safari services should not be confused with VITRAN's fixed-route bus contract.
Which option fits each island?
St. Thomas
Use licensed taxis for the airport, cruise ports, Magens Bay, Coral World, Red Hook, and most hotel transfers. VITRAN can work for flexible daytime travel along a matching route. Rent a car when the trip involves repeated cross-island movement, but remember that traffic drives on the left.
St. John
Use safari taxis for common North Shore beach trips, a rental vehicle for a multi-day villa stay with frequent exploring, and a prearranged driver for Coral Bay or late dinners. There is no airport; ferry timing is part of every arrival and departure plan.
St. Croix
The island is larger and destinations are more dispersed. Taxis handle airport and planned transfers, while a rental vehicle is often more practical for travelers moving between Christiansted, Frederiksted, beaches, and rural attractions.
The practical replacement for an app
Before travel, save the official taxi contact for the arrival airport, the number of a recommended local driver, the relevant ferry operator, and the VITRAN route page. Confirm prices before boarding and carry enough small bills for a ride if a card terminal is unavailable.
