Can your St. John stay work without a car?

Choose your base and your must-do stops before deciding against a rental. A stay near Cruz Bay and a stay elsewhere on St. John have different transport needs; a ferry ticket does not arrange those local rides.

Check the park’s arrival guidance

Start with the exact property

Ask the property or manager where you arrive, whether the route from the ferry is suitable for your group and luggage, and how you will reach groceries and your planned activities. An area label does not establish walkability.

Separate a walk from a ride

The National Park Service describes walking from the Cruz Bay ferry terminal to its visitor center and Lind Point trailhead. That is a specific connection, not evidence that every beach or property can be reached on foot. For park stops, NPS advises arranging a specific taxi return pickup, especially when dropped at a beach; this is planning guidance, not confirmation of service for your place or time. Confirm pickup location, availability and return arrangements with the responsible provider.

Decide before committing

Keep the no-car plan if your base and essential stops have confirmed transport you are comfortable using. Reconsider the base or rental choice if a necessary ride or return remains unresolved. Current fares, on-demand pickup and your exact property access are not verified here.
