Dorothea's own reputation is modest — a stretch of sand fronting a dated condo complex on St. Thomas's West End, exposed enough to draw the occasional surfer but not usually a beach anyone drives out specifically to lounge on. What actually brings people here is what's next door: the unmarked trailhead for Neltjeberg Bay sits in the forest on Dorothea's left side, and hiking blogs and even a well-traveled Uncommon Caribbean writeup describe wandering over from Dorothea specifically because the beach itself felt like it could be better. The roughly 20-minute trail climbs a small hill around the peninsula, crosses an intermittent stream, and connects to a paved-then-dirt road before dropping into Neltjeberg's genuinely secluded cove — a route repeat visitors describe as easy to miss without knowing exactly where to look, since there are no signs. Some hikers push even further to Little Neltjeberg by continuing the trail or swimming around the coastline. Treat Dorothea as a starting point and a parking spot rather than a destination: the real payoff is a 20-minute walk away.
