Hiking on St. Croix

Choose a St. Croix trail by terrain, drive time, and what you want afterward

St. Croix trails can lead to historic ruins, coastal views, beaches, or a longer outdoor day, but they are not interchangeable add-ons. Start with the island side and the amount of time you have, then compare the terrain, shade, water needs, and what is close enough to do after the hike.

For a boat or beach combination, keep the trail modest and leave room for the return. For a dedicated hiking day, bring the basics and give the route more time than the map line suggests, especially when heat, uneven ground, or a remote trailhead is involved.

Before you decide

  • Carry water and plan the trailhead before leaving town.
  • Use a nearby beach or meal as the second half of the day only when the route allows it.
  • Check current access and conditions before relying on a remote trail.
